Skimming Techniques

Scanning Techniques

How to Scan:

⁕ Move your eyes quickly over the text until you find the information.

When to Use:
When looking for dates, names, statistics, or specific details.


Identifying Main Ideas

Definition:
The central point or argument of the text.

How to Identify:
⁕ Often found in the introduction or conclusion.
⁕ Look for repeated concepts or themes.
⁕ Pay attention to the thesis statement in academic texts.

Identifying Supporting Details

Definition:
Information that explains, proves, or expands the main idea.

How to Identify:
⁕ Supporting details are often found in the body paragraphs.
⁕ Ask yourself how each detail connects to the main idea.
⁕ Look for examples, statistics, and explanations that reinforce the main idea.


Reading Comprehension Strategies
Active Reading

Annotate:
Write notes, highlight key points, and mark confusing sections.

Summarize:
